ASKLEPIOS ALOHA--THE FUTURE OF OPEN-SOURCE MEDICAL SOFTWARE IN HAWAII

With a well-defined set of data elements, interactions, and
procedures, it seems reasonable to expect a significant improvement
in the quality of health care delivered throughout Asia and the
Pacific. When a patient has to travel to Honolulu for treatment, his
or her medical records will be easily obtainable, and follow-up
treatment more easily monitored. Consultations will also be easier
and the results less prone to errors of interpretation. It ought to
be possible to get the same benefits in other medical centers, such
as Singapore. Local health care service should be improved as well,
due to the automation of current manual record keeping systems at
almost no cost.

PANELISTS

Dan Davis, M.D., from Queen's Hospital and Interactive Care
Technologies, a promoter and developer of commercial medical
software including at home telemonitoring.

Lawrence Burgess, M.D., Director of Telemedicine/Clinical Affairs,
John A. Burns School of Medicine, University of Hawaii.

Tin Myaing Thein, East-West Center alumnus and executive director of
Pacific Gateway Center (http://www.pacificgateway.org/).

Warren Togami, leader of the Fedora project (http://www.fedora.us/)
and the Hawaii Linux For Schools project, showcased at Mid-Pacific
Institute.
