Yes, switching to a lighter weight window manager will give
you the best bang for the buck. If you can afford it, add more
memory.

Gentoo and FreeBSD may give you a speed bump because you get the
opportunity to recompile all the binaries. So everyþhing you run
is optimized for your CPU. But, I would not call them bare-bones.
8000+ ports is rather large.
