I suggest you download and install some applications. Start with stuff on
your distro's CD (Red Hat and Debian are quite different in this regard.)
Then move on to downloading a source-code tarball and running config
yourself. SourceForge is a great source.

If it's not making a terrible grinding noise I'd just wash the scratches
with a damp towel and move on.
