People need to be aware who they are sending messages to 
before sending it. Plain and simple. This is true whether
or not the Reply-To: header is being munged.

Not true. Most OSS mailing lists are "reply-to-sender".

The endless Cc: list can be limited by using Bcc.

Sure. I have no objection to reverting the change.
But let us decide on a policy and stick to it.
