First thing you can try...

You are currently running
kernel-2.4.18.6mdk-1-1mdk.

Please try this kernel from Mandrake Cooker. It appears to be the same
kernel with additional fixes applied.
ftp://videl.ics.hawaii.edu/mirrors/mandrake/Mandrake-devel/cooker/i586/Mandr
ake/RPMS/kernel-2.4.18.13mdk-1-1mdk.i586.rpm

Download the file and use "rpm -ivh packagename.rpm" to install it.
**** I went into shell and logged in under root and did the following:

rpm -ivh packagename.rpm
error: open of packagename.rpm failed: No such file or directory

Always use INSTALL and not UPGRADE when installing binary kernel RPM
packages so
that it keeps your old kernel version installed too. You can then choose
either kernel from your GRUB or LILO boot menu. This is a safety measure so
that you can always go back to the old kernel if the new one is completely
broken.

If you are using GRUB, then rpm -ivh should automatically add the new kernel
to your boot menu.

If you are using LILO, it may require manual editing of /etc/lilo.conf and
reinstallation of LILO. **** I'm using LILO and have not idea of how to
reinstall LILO... I have an idea of how to edit Lilo.conf with the editors
but I wouldn't know what to put in.. I'm still a greenhorn... but learning
very quickly... (I really appreciate your help)
