What would Plato say about learning? In that spirit, I'd recommend "Teach
Yourself C" by Herbert Schildt. You probably won't end up programming in C
much, but it's a great base language from which many other languages and
ideas stem from. "Teach Your C++" by Schildt is probably too advanced -
even after the first noted Schildt book. Instead, you should probably study
more C or Java. C++ is great stuff, but it's not the best place for people
to start. Python is a better place, I'd agree. Java is not too bad either,
since beginning Java books skip the OO (object oriented) stuff completely.
I'd recommend going over to Borders - and having a few coffees - and just
start cheching out all those great books. Then, when you find the perfect
computer class, you can really start to absorb stuff more fully. In any
case, I'd also be happy to help with any C or Java questions. Programming
is a lot of fun, but it's not always easy to get into it. And although I'm
not a "programmer" per se, I can program if I want - and sometimes I even
get inspired.
Have fun, Patrick.
