I never use the X version, I prefer menuconfig too.

Both of the default kernels shipped with 8.0 and 8.1 have a few minor
problems.  I just now tested compiling 2.4.13-pre1 and it works fine for me
when compiling the modules.

Did you save the new .config file?  Alternatively you can run "make
oldconfig" and it will ask you about only the new kernel options added.
