If you compile your own kernel, use one of the following:
2.2.13-pre1, because 2.2.12 has a nasty symlink bug. These kernels have a
completely new VM re-written from scratch.

2.2.10-ac12 (should be very stable, using stabilized Rik's VM layer)

Do NOT use 2.2.11, 2.2.12 or 2.2.12-ac1.
Alternatively, you can try Mandrake's Cooker kernels. Simply download a
kernel RPM, use "rpm -ivh" then update your LILO or GRUB accordingly.

Thanks for the suggestion Warren!
Is the 2.4.8-26mdk kernel screwed up too? I haven't been using the 2.2
kernel series for a while.
In an effort to kill the evil kapm-idled, I was trying to recompile a
leaner kernel, but the modules refused to recompile. After the usual
make menuconfig in which I didn't change any of the default settings(I
know, you guys all use the X version), make dep, make clean and make
bzImage, make modules resulted in several errors about a number of
variables being undeclared. I didn't bother with the modules_install or
the rest. I've got all of the necessary kernel support RPMs installed,
but the modules won't compile out-of-the-box.
Is Mandrake 8.1 suffering from rush-to-market?
Thanks,
