Mixed network connectivity

It seems to me that the 192.168.X.X are non routable
internal IPs.  So with a Internet gateway set up, it
looks like the ping would route out to the Internet
and time out because the IP shouldn't be routable externally.

This is just a guess though.  You can try a traceroute and see
if the packet is actually leaving your home LAN.
