Quick and goofy question:

I just inherited a linux box, but I don't understand
the settings.  The "virtual screen" is significantly
larger than the monitor's screen is.  I'm used to
having four different desktops, which the machine has,
but this is different, each desktop having a giant
extended screen, and the only way I can access
different parts of the screen is by dragging the mouse
in the direction I'm trying to go.

Can anybody give me some advice on how to set this to
normal?  It's running slackware.
