Unix Jobs

A friend of mine manages the IT department for one of the largest banks here. I asked him why he is not considering Linux or at least Unix, he answered that the big bosses would only consider NT. An experienced Unix engineer will do a much better job than a person with MCSE, which is basically a Microsoft marketing tool, even in an NT environment. But the big bosses don't care about that.

Recently, Office Depot has decided to go with Linux based POS (point of sales) in its 4000 stores nationwide, and is in the process of considering whether to move their e-commerce server from W2K to Linux. Perhaps in the future we should try to invite the head of their e-commerce group to give a seminar here.

What really got to me was guys telling me if I got my MCSE they could bring me into a entry level NT admin position! That'll make you want to hurt people in an interview!!!!!

Dice seems to come up empty handed (save for a sysadmin position that requires 5 years of Solaris experience, versus my 3, I'll see how that turns out)- and the Hawaiian job sites were just as much of a help.

Everything was going fine, until the point when the stock market imploded, the dot-coms crashed, and with it my consulting firm's client base. I was laid off with a letter of recomendation and a severence check - I then decided to head back to Hawaii to find a living. From what I've been reading, I'm not the only person whose come back to Hawaii from Silicon Valley.
