Well, the problem is, I don't have a vision of the big picture. I don't
know what LUAU members want. I certainly don't know what the capabilities
of LUAU are. So it is hard to comment on these groups, must less make
suggestions to them.

If you want a basic suggestion, here's one. Fix up the webpage quick,
that thing hasn't changed since who knows when. The 'next meeting' page
still says the next meeting is on Aug. 1998. Then write up a cgi for
polling purposes. This way, people can poll and comment without sending
'me toos' to the list. If it is too much effort to maintain a good
looking page, then just have a simple text only page. I prefer something
that is uptodate than eye-candy. You can always have two web pages, one
that is text only and one with all the visual delites.

Here's another. Put all that stuff in your head online. I'm sure your
head can hold lots of information. But unless the members get access to
them, they can't contribute. Note, by 'in your head', I mean those things
that are related to LUAU which you have on your computer or your desk. I
don't mean literally.

You have to provide a foundation where it is easy to make suggestions,
before you can request suggestions. How do you do this? Again, I don't
know enough about the capability of LUAU to make any suggestions. To get
pass this obsticle, how about putting on the web page a list of all the
resources available to LUAU? Note, only permanent resources count. I
doubt anyone would work on a project that only gets usage for about a week
or a month. Here's a list of stuff that should be useful:

1. Net access: how much bandwidth does LUAU have to the net?
2. Computers: how much cpu power is available?
3. Equipment: are there any special devices available to LUAU?
4. Knowledge: what is the knowledge level of contributing members?
5. Leadership: what is the direction of LUAU?

It is odd that leadership is listed as a resource, but it really is.
Organizations and groups (from my experience) don't move through votes or
agreements, they are herded by a leader. If the members don't like the
direction, they find a new leader (or convince the leader to change). I
know lots of people don't like to hear this, but it is true.

Here is an example of #4: I am a full time software engineer. I mainly
program in C, on the job. But I prefer to program in C++. I am also
working on the TWIN project. Actually, I'm the maintainer of that
project. I know how to setup and use cvs, and just about anything related
to software development. I'll volunteer to help anyone who wants to learn
C or C++.  Note, I'm not a graphics person.  I don't know Motif/GTK or
anything that requires a window. All of my programs are scrolling text.
I also don't know much about system administration or security. I learn
just enough to keep the system up. If anyone find my domain of knowledge
to be useful, just drop me an email.

Now, your turn. That goes for the rest of you.

P.S. Don't forget to put this stuff on the web page.
