I think it would need to boot from BIOS, so the laptops would have to 
support that. Gotta check that with the potential business partners.

Doing it from grub/lilo from a minimal on-disk installation to a USB device 
is a lot easier, and can be done on older hardware pretty trivially.

There's an unofficial chapter (non-affiliated, complex to explain) in DC 
that I help run, I'm listmom and one of the meeting coordinators. Used to 
be part of Usenix (http://www.usenix.org/), this year SAGE was spun off (is 
in the process of being spun off, really) into an independent corporation, 
but both are definitely worth joining in some cases, for different reasons.
