Well, there is much to ponder from all your input, thanks. It's not leading to
much faith in the few users I'm been able to convince to try Linux (or the
rubberneckers) when I reinstall the OS (my own lacking) or switch to another
distro. I was trying to build up more experience with the CentOS 4 desktop
before deploying it on the server (currently running an outdated RedHat).
However, the 2 replies (plus those on the CentOS forum) citing problems with
updating CentOS are giving me second thought.
As for the problem PC, I had cold booted it and was ready to insert the CentOS
CD to reinstall. Lo and behold, it successfully booted. If there is going to be
any hope of converting users to Linux, I am going to have to stop hamstringing
the effort using questionable/substandard hardware.
