For stacking up towers and desktop boxes (as opposed to 19" rackmount
stuff) try "Metro" shelving or the various-branded knockoffs of it. I
know you can buy it at Fisher, and maybe at HD as well?

It's pretty sturdy stuff, easy to put together, stable, and will hold
quite a bit of weight. LavaNet uses it for non-rackmount customer
equipment in its customer colo area (though that's in a controlled A/C
environment rather unlike the average garage.) I'm sure we aren't the
only ISP to have done that. The open wire shelving means that it
doesn't create cooling problems for you, though it also doesn't keep
out dust, bugs, and other garage residents you might not want inside
your computers.
