[luau] Help needed at McKinley

I just wanted to fill in the HOSEF group on our small-scale effort here
on the Big Island.

We are meeting this Sunday for the second time at the Hilo Community
School for Adults. We rehabbed their PC lab to a LTSP lab. After
talking to the administrators they agreed to fund an upgrade of NICs,
switch and a new server; we've purchased that equipment and will be
installing it on Sunday.

We'll then be the same position of being able to offer Linux training or
other open-source type classes in Hilo. It's a small lab: there are
only 15 seats or so, but I'm amazed at how well LTSP works off of an
Athlon Redhat box.

We are hoping to use the lab to showcase LTSP technology to other
administrators and school tech personnel here. We've identified a
couple of schools that are interested if we could get boxes for them.

I think having a school for adults lab running Linux is a GREAT
OPPORTUNITY for grass-roots Linux outreach. Maybe we can collaborate
our efforts in the labs somehow in the future.

Regards,

| What a day it has been. The lab is really coming along now. I want to thank
| Ted and Alex for coming down to help work on the lab. Ted being quite the
| hard-worker really set the place straight, there is a good plan in place
| for the lab. With this up coming lab, there are really interesting ideas
| brewing.
|
| There is still a good deal of work to be done. We have 2 very important
| projects to complete by Saturday. We need someone who is good with Red Hat.
| The first project is to install Red Hat on 11 computers we have in our
| smaller lab for classes that are coming up. It needs to dual boot between
| Win2K and Red Hat, but default booting to Win2K. The second project is to
| install Red Hat on 10 computers in our other lab in a special way. It needs
| to boot from a floppy instead of a boot partition or the MBR. If you have
| the time to come down and help I'd really appreciate it.
|
| The community support has been wonderful. This is our first time running
| Linux Classes and there have been quite a few bumps in the road along the
| way. However, things are beginning to get smoothed out now. This session is
| a good start and I expect the next session to be even better. Please be
| patient as we are learning and growing these classes into what we hope will
| be a strong community resource. As an Adult Community School we are
| committed to lifelong learning.
|
| Thank you.

| We need help to setup our lab, we have the room, the computers are there.
| Now we need help setting it up. Personally I am just learning Linux, so I
| really can't do much technical work, but I know what is possible and we
| have a plan.
|
| In parnership with HOSEF we plan to run HOSEF sponsored Linux classes in
| this and our other labs.
|
| Plan of attack:
| Lab 1 - new lab, nothing setup
| - Setup the layout of the room
| - Place computers on tables
| - Partner the monitor and box together
| - Create and layout network cables
| - Update Mandrake
| Lab 2 - computers setup, need to setup dual boot between Red Hat and Win2K
| - Install Red Hat 9
| - On startup default to Windows.
|
| Lab 2 needs to setup by Monday. Lab 1 needs to be setup by June 30.
|
| Here's my schedule of when I'll be at McKinley Community School
| - Tomorrow, Wednesday, from 9am - 5pm, but I'll stay until 9pm if someone
| is willing to come in.
| - Thursday, 9am - 3pm
| - Friday, 9am - 5pm, but I'll stay until 9pm if someone is willing to come
| in.
| - Saturday, 9am - 5pm, I'll be doing a workshop, but I can open up and
| answer questions.
|
| So I know when to expect you and to make sure I am on campus, please give
| me a call on my cell, 429-3030.
|
| Thank you.
