Actually, I only ask questions here after the google comes up dry or (as in 
this case) returns an ocean of garbage I can't wade across and I can't 
think of a way to narrow it down. But you've given me a good clue -  with 
the word "oplock" added to the search, I came up with the following, from

So apparently it's a question of whether my platforms support oplocks.

In retrospect, just searching samba.org for "nfs" would have been a good idea.
