What do you define as better?  Maybe you are more familiar with Windows 
and therefore feel more comfortable with it.  This is the case with almost everyone
My kids (10 and 11) use Gnome 
as easily Windows 98/2000.  I'll admit, I have more applications 
for Windows then Linux and all of their games are for Windows but they do 
not complain that one desktop is better then the other.  They know how to
use them both equally.  They can use AbiWord and Opera as easily as
MS Word and IE.
Use of the the command prompt is another issue but again, they do not know
how to use DOS either.  For them, learning DOS and learning a Unix shell
would be equally challenging.   

I believe MS has two distinct advantages in maintaining the majority desktop placement.  Amount of applications and a users existing familiarity with the pre existing 
software applications.  Neither of these make it technically better and really have nothing to do with the OS at all.
