Is it really gone, or the control to access it is gone?  If you press 
ALT-F2, does it take you to a second workspace, and if you press ALT-F1 
does it take you back?  If so you are just missing the pager from your 
panel.  To get it back, right click on the panel and choose add to 
panel, and then Applet >> Utilities >> Desk Guide  (or possibly Pager 
depending on your version of Gnome).  

If that doesn't work, then you may only have one workspace enabled.  To 
enable more, run a program called sawfish-ui and click the Workspaces 
tab, and raise the number and click okay.
