Hmmm, what does ls -l /tmp | grep orbit-hersh say?  in the owner and 
group columns of the output is it hersh or something else? (root? a number?)

You are running a version of gnome that is two years old, you may want 
to consider
upgrading.  A lot of cool features and bug fixes have come out since then.
