If you rename something.rtf to something.doc, Word will open it as it
would any real .doc and not complain or ask any questions. The only
time you would notice is if you used Save As on the same document,
the Save As dialog box will default back to type rtf when asking for
a filename.
I have been sending out my resume in that manner. I used to send it
in rtf but many recruiters/HR people replied back asking for it in
Word format, not wanting to deal with that anymore, I renamed it to
resume.doc and send that file by default now. If you are actually
using MS Word and save a file in RTF format, make sure you close it
completely and reopen it in Word again to make sure it still looks
right.
Another thing I've noticed and I don't know if it's the fault of
AbiWord, OO, MS Word or simply a technical limit with RTF in general
but I've found a few times that a RTF that looks fine in one app does
not mean it's going to look the same opened in something else. In a
general document that may not matter but I want to make sure
something like my resume looks the way I expect it to before sending
it out. Conversion to PDF or PS fixes that but I havent met anyone
that requests those.
