I beg to differ.

Having just done win98 and Mandrake 8.1 installs (2 or 3 of each) on
the exact same machine over the last month, I can say honestly that
the Mandrake install was markedly faster, about 20-30 minutes versus
45-60 minutes for win98se on the same machine (Celeron 600 with 128
MB RAM and 5400 MB IDE hard drive).

This was with a full suite of Linux applications compared to a
barebones win98 install even without counting the time to load the
second edition stuff from the other CD, nor the time needed to
install and configure the networking stuff and other accessories that
were not included in the default win installation but were already
taken care of during the Mandrake install.
