LCD display question

Most of the cheaper LCD displays take analog input via a mini D-sub
15 pin connector and look unfocused and inferior to most laptop
displays. I'm assuming that the only way to get a really crisp display
is to use a video card with a DVI connector that can drive the LCD
directly, without any loss of clarity from a conversion from
digital-analog and back. Have any of you personally compared powering
LCD displays directly via DVI versus analog signals from an ordinary vga
card?

Thanks,
