TTY stands for TeleTYpe.  It's a carry over from before monitors were 
used (or atleast I think I heard that somewhere).  ttys are the local virtual
terminals you get by pressing ctrl-alt-f#.  pts is for every other terminal, like
remote logins and xterms and things.
