to check:
ps -eaf |grep named

to kill it, find the instance running as root and:

killall named

then find out what starts bind at boot and comment that out.

alternatively, if you're running redhat,mandrake, or a
similar distro:

/etc/rc.d/init.d/named stop
chkconfig --level 2345 named off

=jay
