A number of people have asked me about installing .tar.gz tarballs, so this
session will cover uncompressing and untarring source tarballs, configuring,
compiling and installing, and how this differs from RPM and SRPM package
installation.  In doing so we will install the Apache web server from source
to serving web pages.

RPM Software Installation
- RPM packages (CD, Rawhide, Cooker)
- Installing Compilers and Libraries

Source Tarball Unpacking, Configuration & Compilation
- Download source tarball
- Unpack with tar, gzip and bzip2
- Read documentation (INSTALL, README, docs/, etc.)
- ./configure
- Library dependencies and installation
- GNU make compilation

Service Startup Configuration
- init, rc.d, /etc/init.d/ script systems
- chkconfig
- linuxconf and setup

Apache
- httpd.conf configuration file
- access_log and error_log
- mod_perl and mod_php script processing
- Simple example of PHP and MySQL for database backed web pages
