X desktop problem - help!

I recently installed Mandrake 8.0 on my persnickety Compaq, and then
set it up as a dual boot Win 98 / Mandrake box.

The install went fine and everything was going smoothly, but after I
modified the desktop resolution settings with KDE after the next
reboot, it doesn't want to start up X - it complains it can't load
the default font "fixed". Also, I'm having problems finding the
resolution controls from the text mode side, since I changed it in
the graphical menus to start with.

I don't want to have to re-install everything just to fix this
problem, I'm hoping somebody may have already encountered something
like this before. Guidance appreciated!
