A good place to start is the kernel how-to.

It has some good info, but can be lacking in some areas. I am sure there
are many other references on the net. Such as

There some particular problems that may occur depending on the
distribution that you run. Others and myself can help you as you move
along, if you decide that you wish to compile a new kernel.
