OpenOffice

You can compare the OpenOffice project to the Mozilla project. Constant
development with snapshot builds along the way. Later this year Sun plans
to use the much improved OpenOffice codebase in StarOffice 6.0. OpenOffice
will always remain free, while StarOffice will be OpenOffice + some
proprietary stuff and the 5.2 old printing system. The OpenOffice guys are
working on a completely free printing system to eventually replace that
proprietary print.

I went to the OpenOffice.org web pages to see what's up. It looks like this
is
still in Beta and definately not ready for prime time use. Did I miss
something or what?

They did do away with the desktop sort of. Now you open up openoffice and
a Word like application comes up but when you click FILE then NEW you have
your choice of all the different file types. So if you choose Spreadsheet
for example, then an excel like spreadsheet pops up in the space. I think
it is actually better than the separate applications idea and think it is
 one up on Windoze. Jeff

I haven't really looked at OpenOffice yet. Did they make it so you can
open just the word processor or just the spreadsheet or does it still have
it's own desktop thingy like StarOffice? That is my main complaint about
StarOffice, you have to open their whole damn desktop thing and it takes
 way too many resources.
