Apache error_log random garbage

One of my friend's servers is having STRANGE problems in the Apache
error_log. Randomly between normal log entries is tons of binary garbage,
and less frequently random dumps of a web page. It doesn't show up in the
log files themselves, but tail -f shows this random garbage and frequent
"linuxlinuxlinuxlinuxlinuxlinuxlinuxlinuxlinuxlinuxlinux" strings flying
across the screen. Anyone heard of this problem? He's using the latest
Nusphere Apache + PHP + MySQL combo. I'm going to try upgrading his Apache
manually next...
