networking problems, but only locally (?)

Yes, hosts file lists everybody in my LAN plus the localhost.
hosts.deny and hosts.allow don't list anybody.

when accessing servers locally, am I going through inetd?
It seems like inetd and tcp wrappers is not the problem because other hosts
in the LAN can access services OK. So I'm wondering if I inadvertently
changed something while screwing around with imap.

Hmm, I do see a new xinetd script in my /etc/rc.d/init.d/ directory but it
seems that is not running:
[root at linuxbox init.d]# ./xinetd status
xinetd is stopped

No big deal, no need for any extraordinary measures, I'll keep hacking at
it. I might just upgrade to Mandrake 7.2, start using xinetd and see what
happens. I was just wondering if this situation sounded familiar to anyone.

Thanks.
Nelson

Do you have localhost in your /etc/hosts file?
