(not quite linux) PHP3 or not to PHP3?

Any of you have this problem with PHP 4.0.4p1?

Whenever I turn on that gzip handler thing in php.ini, there is a serious
memory leak that eats all available memory and goes into swap... slowly
killing the server over time...
