Jason,

I had an insatll failure that was similar to yours with
Caldera Linux and replaced the sis card and everything went
in fine after that.

Sis cards have some issues with Linux.  I used a HIS VT4 PCI
Video card that I got at Personal Touch  computing that they
knew would work with Linux.
