Fellow LUAU members,

With ESR's possible visit the the LUAU group in May, thought this might be of
interest to any who are not subscribed to the Caldera list.

So, just a brief report on last night's SLLUG meeting with Eric S.
Raymond.

We had great turn out. The auditorium seats 400 and it was 3/4 filled to
the back. With some empty seats here and there, after a count we
determined that there were somewhere between 170 and 200 people in
attendance.

Eric's presentation was unexpectably excellent. Plain and simple - it was
great. I have received much email and phone calls from people who were
extremely pleased. His points were right on. He covered OpenSource, why
it works, what it's strong points are, how it has evolved, why it's
winning, why it will win, what closed source's downfalls are, why
Microsoft will lose (has lost), ehy the software industry is really a
service industry, why OpenSource projects are capable of more, evolve
quicker, and are more stable than closed source projects.

More importantly, I found his arguments solidly founded and well
researched. He wasn't the radical preacher that many felt he might be.
He is pretty much a level headed - "this is the way it is and this is what
we need to do" kind of guy. At the same time he is also very funny. As a
unexpected twist he also talked about when close-source is justified and
when a closed source model is an option that a company should take.

He received a standing ovation at the conclusion of his talk. There were
three film crews there to tape ESR. We're working on making the
presentation available via streaming ReaVideo.

Thanks to all those who made it out but special thanks go to Kurt Wall for
doing a lot of the organizing and getting this off the ground.

ciao
