I used to get this message and couldn't figure it out. Then I read that
if you compile your kernel, as say, i686, and all you have is an
i386-compatible processor, you'll have lots of compiling errors, i.e. sig
11, down the road. So what you can do is boot the system with the stock
kernel that comes with the distribution, since those are usually compiled
as i386, then when compiling your kernel make sure to select "386" for
processor type.
I originally had a Cyrix 166 or something, which I thought was considered
686, but in fact 686 is only applicable if you use genuine Intel. Read
the help on "Processor Type" if you're uncertain.
I guess there could be many causes for Sig11, but this is the one i've
seen as most common.
