Okay, this is the same thing as I was saying earlier, and looking back
over your response to it, I noticed you droped one of the switches needed.

startx -- -bpp 16 > x.out 2>&1
       ^^^^^^^^^^

startx is just a shell script that calls X, any switches passed to it are 
used by the script and not passed to the X server until it sees the --
switch.  Once again, I'm not sure if this is the correct solution, but its
still the only thing I've been able to think of.
