The only way I know of to get a clearance is to get a job that requires one. It is kind of a catch 22, you need he clearance to get hired, but you have to get hired to get a clearance! Most people can get an interm (temp) secret in a couple days and then they can work while waiting the 12+ months for their final secret to come in. Then you can start that process all over again for top secret.
