Sounds like your problem is in setting the DISPLAY.  When you ssh to dhcp-196-36 do an 'echo $DISPLAY' and see if it is "dhcp-196-36:0.0", it should be <localsystems>:0.0.  dhcp-196-36 is the <remotesystem>:0.0.  Does that make any sense?
