What kind of speeds is everyone getting with their cable modem or dsl? After reading recent post on /. about which firewall to use and all the data posted I thought I would really test my connection and see. My firewall is a 85Mhz Sparc5, 32mb ram, 1gb hdd, onboard 10Mb ethernet (le0), one extra 100mb ethernet (hme0). le0 connects to cable modem, hme0 connects to 16 port 100mb switch (smc). Load averages: 0.22, 0.15, 0.10, so not much. The system is my firewall, web server (http & https), mail server, dns, NAT, and dhcp. Every now and then I run ntop to see what my throughput is and I am generally happy when I see 1-1.1Mbps (megabit). So today I decided to see how high I could get and start downloading several iso images from some known fast sites (helios.dii.utk.edu mainly). I reached a sustained throughput of 2Mbps according to ntop today while downloading a quicktime movie from bmwfilms and two iso images from helios. Does any else get this kind of speed? I do live in rural Hawaii (Kahaluu) and I don't think too many here have cable modems, so that should help. Dusty So I asked my accountant, do I get an agriculture exemption for my server farm?
