They are typically binary files.  I typically see them as install files 'install.bin' or 'setup.bin'.

Make sure the file is executable.  
'ls -l *.bin' 

If it is not then make it executable. 
'chmod 777 <filename.bin>' (not secure but easy)

Then execute the file 
'./<filename.bin>'
