The conference was held December 6-7, 2000 at the Hawaii Convention Center. Imark Communications produced the tradeshow. In attendance were more than 4,000 registrants, which was double the expectation of conference planners. At the opening ceremony of the inaugural event on Wednesday December 6, Governor Benjamin J. Cayetano addressed the attendees. He emphasized how technology is driving Hawaii's future and pointed out legislative tax initiatives he has promoted to foster the growth of knowledge-based industries in Hawaii. The Governor voiced strong support of ITEC's Hawaii Technology Showcase as an excellent forum for information technology exchange. Governor Cayetano and Tamara Kamna (Regional Manager, Imark Communications) cut the ribbon to open the conference Exhibition Floor. The Hawaii ITEC featured exhibits and theater presentations showcasing the next generation of solutions for the Internet, global communications, government, and commerce. ITEC also featured major product launches with new and emerging technologies. Over 200 exhibitors, including the Maui High Performance Computing Center, showcased their latest technologies. National, regional, and local industry experts attended the ITEC Hawaii Showcase. Mayor Jeremy Harris stated, "I want to congratulate the State of Hawaii and the Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii for producing an outstanding exhibit and forum on technology-based solutions and economic growth." Sponsors of the Hawaii Technology Showcase included Sun Microsystems, Microsoft, Compaq, Sprint, Oceanic Cable, Bank of Hawaii, and the Maui High Performance Computing Center. Hawaii ITEC 2001 will be held September 19-20, at the Hawaii Convention Center. MHPCC is a center of the University of New Mexico established through a Cooperative Agreement with the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory.
