I forgot to say that you can do the same thing those custom thin clients do with a striped down pc. I am not sure which is more cost effective though. I did see some thin clients that were selling for like $199, but that was an introductory offer. If figure a cheap motherboard and something like a 500mhz processor, 128mb ram, $20 video card (we aren't doing 3D or games with this box), $20 ethernet card (I am pretty sure you can use a boot disk to boot off the network as opposed to buying a special network card to boot off of the net which would be pretty expensive), a cheap harddrive to store local binaries, and a cheap monitor. What kind of configuration are you using for your thin clients Warren? I have done a little reading about different ways to set up a thin client, but I haven't played with anything yet.
