Kim, I would use OpenBSD (www.openbsd.org) instead of Linux for your firewall. OpenBSD is the most secure OS out there today and it is easy to use. IP Filter that comes with OpenBSD is much better than IPChains that comes with Linux. Look at the FAqs on the openbsd site and you will find everything you need to get it up and running and have a secure (and NATed) connection to the internet.
