I can't help thinking a hosef/luau library would involve a lot of work
for someone and very little benefit.

Why not use the Hawaii public library? I guess if you just donate the
books they might sell them, but my experience dredging through their
catalog is that they rarely throw out any techy books - they have some
that are way too old to be useful to anyone other than an antiquarian.
Members can use the web to request that a book anywhere in the system
be sent to them at the library of their choice when it becomes
available. The basic system is great, the only problems are 1) not
enough good books and videos in their collection and  2) too many
people wanting to borrow them. Maybe we can help with problem 1.

I've been meaning to donate my copy of "Painters and Hackers", the
last time I checked they didn't have a copy.

Is there any advantage at all to reinventing this particular wheel? I
guess you could think that limiting access to hosef/luau members would
be a benefit, but since we're all about outreach, I consider that a
minus not a plus.

Which gives me another good idea - use this to promote HOSEF. Before
donating, write/stamp some HOSEF promo info and URL somewhere in the
book, as in "Donated by Hawaii Open Source Education Foundation
(HOSEF), let us help you even more at http://www.hosef.org"
