Sorry our posts must have crossed each other.  Next to StarBasic, Python 
is probably the most intuitive language and the easiest to learn.  I 
like Python because it complements best with XML.  I believe this is 
also the main reason that Fedora is so heavy on Python scripts.  I 
similarly learned Python on my own.  Once out of the beginner level, 
O'Reilly's "Python Cookbook" is one of the most useful books, and is 
highly recommended.

I like Python for another very important reason.  OOo has a built-in 
Python-UNO bridge allowing StarBasic programmers to write Python scripts 
which can be subsequent called from a StarBasic macro.  Personally, I 
view Python as an important extension of StarBasic, a turbo-charge, for 
office automations.  There is really no conflict.
