I don't know how much experience you have with Mandrake, but I had a lot
of problems with 9.0. 9.2 is a much improved version and I would
strongly recommend 9.2. Plus, I assume you are not going to use your
laptop as a server, but rather as kind of "desktop". The version of
OpenOffice included in 9.2 (1.1) is leaps and bounds better than 1.0 in
9.0. For this reason alone, 9.2 is much preferred over 9.0.
One of the best advantages of Mandrake is that you can get live CDs to
test its compatibility with your hardware before installation. Mandrake
has its own live CD, but it is not nearly as good as the one that I
mentioned several times here--PCLINUXOS by Texstar. Again as I
mentioned a couple times here, this is an improved Mandrake 9.2, and,
for desktop type use, I would much prefer it over the regular Mandrake.
As Scott mentioned in a separate post, you shouldn't expect any problem
with your Toshiba Portege. But I would try to make sure that it works
OK but installing it onto my HD. If you have problem downloading
PCLINUXOS, post your message again, I'll try to find some way to loan
you mine. wayne
