You did not say how you created the tunnel. Did you set your
environment so `CVS_RSH=ssh`? If not, then you trying to connect
to the pserver port.

CVS pretty much behaves the same on any unix-like operating
system.

I strongly advise _against_ setting up a repository with pserver.
Tunnel it over ssh instead. Sourceforge has decent documentation
on it.
