Today's public schools struggle with the financial burden of acquiring
adequate numbers of up-to-date textbooks. Some teachers look to web-based
delivery for relief, but face new financial challenges for commercial
on-line courseware and, free or not, the quality of the content. A
Hawaii-based open-source project called Open Slate hopes to solve these
problems through a unique combination of the open-source development model
and the long-established academic tradition of peer review.

Do you think the open-source development model can succeed in was has been
a largely for-profit textbook authoring and publication market?
