Recent versions of Linux no longer have the 1024 cylinder restriction.
Any computer that can run WinXP can have Linux entirely above 1024
cylinders and it should still work fine.

Please use a modern distribution like Red Hat 8.0 or Mandrake 9.0,
almost all problems you described are either solved or immediately
obvious in these newer versions.

Do you have high speed Internet? You can quickly download the CD images
from our local mirrors:

ftp://videl.ics.hawaii.edu/mirrors/redhat/linux/8.0/en/iso/i386
ftp://mplug.oceanic.com/mirrors/redhat/linux/8.0/en/iso/i386
Red Hat 8.0 (you need the first 3 discs)

ftp://videl.ics.hawaii.edu/mirrors/mandrake/Mandrake/iso
ftp://mplug.oceanic.com/mirrors/mandrake/Mandrake/iso
Mandrake 9.0
