Think of the at queue like a print queue. If there are no print
jobs, it does not mean you cannot print. You probably do not need
at. To make sure nothing tries to run it, you can chmod 0000 at
and atd or remove the package.

Well, there _should_ be something in /etc/crontab.

You do not necessarily need cron either, but having it really
helps with the house cleaning duties, like running backups and
downloading package updates. FreeBSD has a really nice built-in
system that sends you two nightly E-mail messages.
